Les grands cols mythiques des Alpes

This route is specially intended for those wishing to cycle up the legendary Alpine cols.

Starting from Bourg d'Oisans, take the D1091 towards Grenoble. In Rochtaillée, turn right onto the D526 towards Allemond and start the long and difficult climb up to the Col de Croix de Fer via Le Rivier d'Allemond and the Grand Maison dam on the D926 (crossing into Savoie). Ignore the left-hand turning up to the Col du Glandon. After the Croix de Fer, enjoy the long, dizzy descent into St-Sorlin-d'Arves, St-Jean d'Arves and St-Jean de Maurienne. Cycle up the Maurienne valley on the D1006 to St-Michel de Maurienne and then turn right onto the D902 to attack the second col of the day, namely the Col du Télégraphe and on to the village resort of Valloire. Ride through Valloire and get ready for the best part of the day, the Col du Galibier at 2647 m. From the Col, free-wheel back down the long descent towards Bourg d'Oisans and cross back over into Isère via the Col du Lautaret, La Grave, the Chambon dam and Le Freney d'Oisans. Take a break to admire the glaciers of the Meije.
