A lône is a river arm that separated from it and is only filled with water during overflow from the river or during flooding.

With their stagnant waters, lônes have rich ecosystems and are often the focus of conservation programs. Many are protected by a biotope preservation order or, at least, an European Natura 2000 status.

They consist of habitats that are particularly favourable to biodiversity: alluvial forests, shrubby willow plantations, eutrophic stagnant freshwaters, hydrophyte beds and reed beds.

In the Avenières area, the very gentle slope of the Rhone river led to the formation of banks of sand or gravel. Probably, they had disappeared during floods or, enlarged by other deposits, they have gradually turned into islands.
Between these islands, arms gradually became separated from the main channel and are now dead arms or 'lônes', quite areas for fish to spawn.
