The Brassard Cross

  • Historic site and monument

Fixed to a brick column standing on a stone base, this remarkable cast-metal cross is features symbols of the Passion of Christ.

There is nothing random about the way the creator has placed the various implements and objects relating to the Passion of Christ. On the contrary, the piece displays an intelligent and orderly composition that gives observers a complete overview of the passion and death of Christ.

The upper part of the cross bears:
- A phylactery with the initials INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Judeorum), meaning Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
- The three nails used to nail Christ to the wooden cross.

The centre of the cross is decorated with a circular glory surrounding:
- The Chalice and Host
- An ornamental sacerdotal stole, which widens into a paddle shape at each end
- The Sacred Heart in flame, symbolising the love of Christ
- Grapes and vine leaves on either side, representing Eucharist.

On the right arm of the cross:
- The Ewer: this pitcher has several possible meanings: it could be a reference to Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, or to Pilate washing his hands of any responsibility for the death of his prisoner (according to Matthew), or to the jug in which Christ was offered vinegar to drink
- A gladiator sword (broadsword with a curved blade)

On the left arm of the cross:
- The ladder used to remove Christ's sacrificed body from the cross
- The symbolically important spear, which was driven into the side of Christ's body to ensure he was dead.
- The stick and sponge soaked in vinegar, used to wet Christ's lips when he wanted to drink.

On the bottom upright part:
- The baluster-shaped column represents the whipping post to which Christ was tied before being whipped.
