D'une distillerie à l'autre

This circuit takes you on a journey to discover a facet of the historical heritage of Chartreuse: the Chartreuse distilleries.

The site of Fourvoirie marks one of the entrances to the Chartreuse Desert. One of the bridges, built in the 13th century, gave its name to the town of Saint-Laurent-du-Pont. On the right bank of the Guiers Mort, the Chartreux monks once initiated significant metallurgical activities that continue today in the Saint-Laurent plain. They established a distillery on the opposite bank, which was destroyed by a landslide in 1935.

(1) From the Saint-Laurent-du-Pont Tourist Office, head toward Chambéry, cross the bridge, and follow the yellow marker "Les Provenches." Climb the stairs, follow the road, and turn right, still heading toward "Les Provenches."

(2) In the hamlet, turn right and take the path marked with a yellow sign toward "Fourvoirie." Descend to the old forges and cross the bridge to discover the Fourvoirie distillery, which was the production site for the famous Chartreuse from 1862 to 1935 (with a hiatus from 1903 to 1929).

(3) Cross back over the bridge and head toward Piquetière. The route continues along an ancient Roman road, the "Via Sarda," marked by works from the Artists of Chartreuse (see the Artistic Trail of Côte Curt).

(4) At Piquetière, take the left path that descends to the hamlet of Bourdoires. Cross the hamlet while following the yellow markers, heading toward "Le Burdin and Aiguenoire." At Le Burdin, turn right. The new Chartreuse distillery, inaugurated in August 2018, will be visible on your right.

(5) This production site is not open for visits, but you can learn about the history and production process of Chartreuse at the Caves de la Chartreuse in Voiron. Turn left toward "Sous Aiguenoire" and "La Rosette." Be cautious when crossing the main road.

(6) At "La Rosette," turn left, cross the bridge spanning the Guiers Mort, and follow the path to the left back to Saint-Laurent-du-Pont.
