Batteries du Néron

  • Historic site and monument

Part of Grenoble's defensive system, the Quichat batteries on Mont Rachais and the Néron batteries were built at the end of the 19th century.

Several firing platforms kept watch over the Charmette, Porte and Vence passes to the north, and the Voreppe combe to the west. Located on steep strategic points, these batteries benefited from a natural defensive system, reinforced in the case of the Néron by a fifty-metre tunnel through a rocky spur, which also contained the powder magazine. Each set of batteries was controlled by a garrison of 52 men, 3 non-commissioned officers and an officer, housed in a guardhouse whose remains still stand today.
