Ice diving in Chamrousse!

Ice diving is an extraordinary adventure, blending adrenaline with the crystal-clear beauty of winter’s depths. Slip into your dry suit, secure your mask and oxygen, and prepare to explore a world frozen beneath the surface.

At Robert Lakes, the icy silence unveils a hidden realm with each dive, offering a unique experience.

For thrill-seekers and explorers alike, this immersion into the heart of nature is unforgettable.

A blanket of snow envelops Chamrousse, the peaks hidden by thick clouds, as if the mountains are sheltered under a vast canopy. A ghostly atmosphere settles over the resort. Skiing? Not today! Nature offers a different kind of alpine adventure – not on the slopes, but beneath the ice.

Today’s perfect conditions invite you to discover the silent world of ice diving. No fear, no cold, just adventure!

From the resort of Chamrousse, take the gondola lift, followed by a chairlift, to the stunning Lakes Robert, where you’ll find the little wooden hut of Dive Xtreme.

Expect a warm welcome and an informative briefing, followed by a demonstration of the equipment—no prior scuba diving experience needed! You simply breathe normally into the mask.

Just stay calm, vertical in the water, with arms up and legs slightly back, and you’re all set for an incredible under-ice adventure.

Why you should give it a try

An unforgettable experience you must try! Step out of your comfort zone and explore an exhilarating, non-skiing activity.

Time for a metamorphosis

Specialist ice diving gear allows you to stay warm underwater. You start by keeping your T-shirt and leggings on, before slipping into cosy fleece pyjamas (the teddy bear kind). Then come the thick wetsuit and the diving suit, which cover you from head to toe.

Finally, Thibault or Tanguy slips on waterproof gloves with anchoring rings around the inner gloves, sealing the deal.

With its unique look and the sensation of walking on the moon, the experience starts here!

At the lake’s edge, the expert team helps you prepare for a remarkable journey. The equipment is simple and efficient: weights to help you descend, an oxygen tank with a regulator for breathing, fins for smooth movement, and a specialised diving mask. The process is straightforward and safe – you’ll breathe naturally through the mask connected to your tank.

Before your underwater adventure begins, you’ll test your gloves for waterproofness, one hand at a time. Then, with gentle guidance, you’ll ease into the water, mastering the art of sinking beneath the ice instead of floating on the surface.

Rest assured, you’re in expert hands. The Dive Xtreme team stays close throughout your journey, providing guidance, reassurance, and constant safety supervision as you explore this mesmerising underwater world.

No previous scuba diving experience is required! Just breathe normally and gently into the mask.

The moment you slip beneath the ice, you enter another dimension. You feel both vulnerable and invincible. Cut off from the world, profound silence reigns, broken only by the gentle rhythm of your breath and heartbeat.

Marvel at the play of light, the shimmering effects of the ice above and the joyful dance of air bubbles as they come into contact with the ice. Here, Mother Nature reveals her true essence – magnificent yet fragile, delicate yet awe-inspiring.

Although the experience lasts just 10 to 15 minutes, it leaves you wanting more. But for now, you’re back on land, like a graceful sea lion, gently pulled up to the edge of the lake by a helping hand.

It’s an unforgettable experience you simply must try: step out of your comfort zone and discover a non-skiing winter adventure.

Of course, we’ll do it again (the diving, not the sea lion bit). We’ll certainly talk about it and cherish the memory for years to come.
