Ancienne mairie-école, Centre du Graphisme
Characteristic of the architecture of the 1930s, this monumental town hall-school marks the creation of the new urban center of Echirolles. Today, it houses the Centre du Graphisme, whose vocation is to disseminate graphic culture on a daily basis.
In 1926, Société Nationale de la Viscose set up an artificial silk factory in Grenoble, and a year later built the Cité Ouvrière. The population grew rapidly, and the old town hall and school became too small for a town entering the industrial age. A definitive plan for a new building was drawn up in 1930. It proposed a three-part construction: the town hall and post office in the center, the girls' school in the left wing and the boys' school in the right wing. Levels one and two housed teachers and municipal staff. The most important works took place between 1934 and 1937, under the mandate of Mr. Dechanal, who was also the contractor.
The vast building, with its central body, wings and corner pavilions, is dominated by the silhouette of the belfry-horloge, placed in the axis of the composition. The building is set off by the newly-created public square, and monumentalized by a large flight of steps leading to the entrance porch. The quality of this architecture lies both in its overall composition and in its details (wings, corner pavilions, modenature, materials, treatment of details, joinery, etc.). In 2006, the opening of the third Town Hall made available the premises of this emblematic public building, which has since been converted into the Centre du Graphisme. A new school complex was built behind the building.
The building has been awarded the "Patrimoine en Isère" label, recognizing the heritage quality of a building of departmental interest.
