Eglise de Proveysieux

  • Historic site and monument

A small edifice with a single nave and circular apse, the church of Proveysieux dominates its valley. It is distinguished by its bell tower-porch - typical of ancient Dauphiné churches - which has partially preserved its Romanesque elevations and decoration.

The irregularly-planned, oriented edifice is set in its cemetery on a site overlooking the Tenaison valley. A two-storey bell tower-porch with sloping base marks the entrance to the single nave, which extends into a semicircular apse. A sacristy and chapel line the south gutter wall.

An "ecclesia de Provaisieu" is mentioned as early as the 12th century in the cartulary of Saint-Hugues. It depended on the Saint-Robert de Cornillon priory, instituted by Saint Robert, founder of the Chaise-Dieu abbey. According to a 1673 pastoral visit by Mgr Le Camus, there were already two chapels, one dedicated to Saint-Fabien (then Saint-Antoine) and Saint-Sébastien, the other to Saint-Jacques and Saint-Philippe. In 1733 (pastoral visit of Mgr Jean de Caulet), the gallery above the entrance was reserved for the Penitent brotherhood; at this time, there was also a sacristy next to the Saint-Jacques (south) chapel.

The current building has partially preserved elements of the former church. The bell-tower-porch is typical of 1st Romanesque art, with its north, east and south faces decorated with skylights crowned by a frieze of arches, and with the beginnings of arcades, probably blind, on the inner north and south faces. The west face, as well as the upper level lit by four geminated bays, was rebuilt in the modern era (17th century?). A round-arched portal (clavé, limestone ashlar) is closed by a two-panel wooden door with wooden transom featuring the chronogram "1686", framing a central carved panel (kneeling Saint Peter holding the key to Paradise and the Bible). The west facade of the nave also retains vestiges of the Romanesque period, such as the remains of a portal under the porch, showing traces of several painted decorations, or this window, now bricked up, illuminating the attic.

The rest of the building is the result of later reconstructions.
