Espace Naturel Sensible de la Merlière
The Espace Naturel Sensible de la Merlière wetland is located in the Estrablin commune, on the outskirts of the Vienne urban area. The Estrablin commune is the site manager.
Covering an area of 18ha, it lies in a former fluvio-glacial valley now occupied by the Gère river and its accompanying water table. At the ENS, the water table comes into contact with the impermeable bedrock of the Massif Central, producing resurgences that are conducive to a diversity of wetlands. Rivers, crystal-clear resurgences, riparian forests and wet meadows provide habitats for rare species such as the mercury agrion, the marsh copper or species requiring fresh, oxygenated water, such as the trout and the sculpin. A path allows visitors to explore the various environments of the ENS and to rub shoulders with the herds that tend the site's meadows.
