Fort de Comboire

  • Historic site and monument

Standing on the imposing Rocher de Comboire which watches over the Drac valley, the last of the 6 forts of the "Séré de Rivières" type built around Grenoble, this ensemble, which has never been modified, is a fine example of military architecture from the end of the 19th century.

Overlooking the Drac valley and the southern part of the Grenoble area, the fort's cannon fire prevented access to the Grenoble basin via the Drac valley and the road coming from the south.

The Rocher de Comboire on which it is built is a limestone massif with numerous galleries dug into its sides to extract cement stone. Initially exploited by the Société des ciments de la Porte de France, then by the Société des ciments Vicat, these quarries were used as raw material for the construction of the fort.

The building has been awarded the "Patrimoine en Isère" label, rewarding the quality of the heritage of a building of departmental interest.
