GR®738 - Stage 1: Aiguebelle - Le pontet
A stage steeped in the history of iron, with mining sites dotting the route. From the Col du Champet to the Col du Grand Cucheron, everyone can still discover this past.
This stage is steeped in the history of iron mining in the Alps. A multitude of former mining sites dot the Hurtières chain, from Grand Montgilbert to Col du Petit Cucheron, from the crests to the Maurienne valley.
Iron in the Belledonne evokes 700 years of history, from Charlemagne and the legend of the Durandal sword to the Schneider company in Le Creusot. Since the Middle Ages, the Hurtières mines have been the most important in Savoie, renowned for the quality of their ores (iron, copper, silver).
To discover this exceptional heritage and visit real mine galleries, stop off at the Musée du Grand Filon, the Hurtières mining site.
