Hôtel de Croÿ-Chanel

  • Historic site and monument

Magnificently restored by the City of Grenoble and the co-owners from 2004 to 2009, this former town house is a fine example of Grenoble's parliamentary residences.

A rare example of a private house from the Renaissance period, the Hôtel is made up of two buildings from different periods and architectural styles.
At the rear, in the courtyard, stands the Renaissance Hôtel, built around 1570 by Pierre Bucher, Attorney General to the Parliament and Dean of the University.
Its facade is punctuated by large geminated bays adorned with a sculpted semi-circular lintel featuring a medallion and foliage, and topped by a larger medallion.
An imposing courtyard supported by nine scrolled brackets runs along both sides of the courtyard.
Facing the street is the prestigious facade of the 18th-century Hôtel de Chabons, built around 1760 by François Gallien de Chabons, a member of Parliament who married a descendant of Pierre Bucher.
It features a first floor built entirely of split-plan stonework and, on either side of the large, projecting central portal, a boutique topped by an entresol.
Owned by a single family until the Revolution, the hotel took the name Croÿ-Chanel when this family acquired the building on the street in 1791.
Listed in 1988.
