Place de la Nation

  • Historic site and monument

This square used to be the courtyard used by the mendicant order of the Augustinian Eremites, who lived on whatever donations they received.
It is also the site of a Historic Monument, the pendulum fountain.
The square was given its current name, Place de la Nation, during the Revolution.

The courtyard of the Augustinian convent used to be closed by a monumental 17th-century gate. The rounded stone features at the foot of the entrance pilasters are guardstones. Their purpose was to protect the wall from the wheels of passing carts.
