Place Notre-Dame

  • Historic site and monument

The Notre-Dame Cathedral towers over this lively square, with entrance tower (13th century), the church of Saint-Hugues (13th century) and the Baptistery (4th-6th centuries). The magnificent Fontaine des Trois Ordres (1897) commemorates the pre-revolutionary events of 1788.

And as Grenoble is no stranger to history, the Fontaine des Trois Ordres (erected in 1888) reminds us that the reunion of the Dauphiné Clergy, Nobility and Third Estate in 1788 was one of the founding events of the French Revolution.
A veritable history book, it recounts these pre-Revolutionary events under the protection of four bronze tritons who proclaim loud and clear the values of the nascent Republic: Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité and Justice.
The square's bright atmosphere and southern flavors (Brocherie, Chenoise...) make it a popular crossroads for terraces and restaurants from near and far.
