Porte Neuve or Porte François Premier
Porte Neuve is the name of the gate built into one of the towers of the enclosure wall during the 16th century. This gate can be considered as a symbol of the transition period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The gate is sometimes named after Francis I in memory of the king's many visits to Crémieu during the Italian wars.
The machicolation (high, uncovered balconies) at the top of the gate were a typical defence feature in medieval times. Further down, however, in the upper third of the gate, we can see a hole. This cannon port presaged the use of gunpowder and heavy artillery, promising much heavier losses in the battles to come.
