Randonnée de la Fontaine ardente

Discover one of the seven wonders of the Dauphiné: the burning fountain, a natural source of methane gas that turns into a flare, during an easy walk. While crossing the hamlet of Bayanne, let the legend of the God-stone be told.

Over time, the fountain has often changed its appearance: in its most spectacular form, it is a spring from which fire itself springs; and of course, it is this unnatural union of two usually hostile elements, water and fire, that has especially struck people.
At the gates of the Trièves, the village of Miribel-Lanchâtre, perched on the top of the eastern balcony of the Vercors, offers magnificent panoramas over the Drac and Trièves plains.

Departure from the village of Miribel-Lanchâtre (parking nearby), reach the crossroads of La Tounie then take the direction of Essart-Garin, passing by Le Plan de Miribel. In Essart-Garin, go up gradually to Le Plan to reach the village of Saint-Barthélémy-du-Gua. From there, direction Miribel-Lanchâtre, the path leads you to Les Clots before returning for a short while to the road that leads to the site of the fountain of fire. The end of the route is done by the road to Bayanne then La Tounie and the village. Between each directional panel, always follow the markings (paint composed of two lines of yellow and green colors. Throughout the circuit, directional signs indicate the direction to follow, the time and distance to walk from one crossroads to another.
Avoid going down to the Fontaine Ardente after heavy rains, the path near the stream is very muddy.
