The Tower of Champ sur Drac

  • Historic site and monument

The Tour de Champ sur Drac is the remaining tower of the ruined château once owned by the noble Alleman family, to which the mother of the renowned Chevalier de Bayard belonged. Now renovated and owned by the community, it still clearly visible from the lower Drac Valley.

Château built in the 12th century by the Alleman family (a powerful family found in the Savoie, Dauphiné and Hautes Alpes regions).
A Catholic bastion, it was burnt down by Lesdiguières and dismantled, with the exception of the tower, in 1587 for 6,000 ecus, during the Wars of Religion. The tower survived the fire, and on its rocky spur dominates the village.
Its coat of arms is the symbol of Champ sur Drac, evoking both the past (with the tower) and the future (with the wheel of industry).
