Washhouse & Watering Hole

  • Historic site and monument

As in many villages, Saint-Sorlin-de-Morestel has a washhouse in each hamlet. The local washerwomen would meet here before running water arrived in their homes.

The washhouse is built in two parts, the washing aisle and the basin. The aisle is protected by a double-slope roof covered in fish-scale tiles. The roof frame is supported by a gable wall, a gutter wall and some metal posts. The walls, which also sheltered the women from bad weather, are made of concrete panels and the basin is a mixture of cement and masonry stone. Some work has been necessary to maintain the watertightness of this small heritage feature, which offers walkers a pleasant place to stop in a lovely green setting.
